African Elders & Friends Group Activities

A Typical Thursday at The Peacemakers

As the service users begin to arrive at the centre by 11.am, we take them to the meeting room where they normally have their activities. Coffee & tea are served by the staff and some elders prefer to join them by preparing their own. During this period, they get to know one another, most especially the new faces.

Issue-topics discussed so far include:

  • One thing you like about this country

Responses included the following:

  • The first person said "privacy"
  • "Freedom of worship"
  • "Health care",  a lady said she had to wait a whole day for 2 tablets in her country but here in England you get an appointment and just take your medicine.
  •  "Water"- not having to carry it, easily accessible here). Don't have to make their children carry buckets of water.
  • “Rule and order" cars stopping at traffic lights.
  • Strong beliefs in culture.

  • Old-age illnesses  and importance of nutrition

Nutritious drinks were served when this issue of health was discussed. Responses included the following:

  • You must drink 2 litres of water (8 glasses) a day
  • Fruit and vegetable should be eaten daily (always remember, 5 a day!)
  • Talking about high blood pressure, the invited nutritionist said that those people with diabetes have to eat healthy food, containing adequate protein, carbohydrates and vitamins.
  • Regular exercises- even only a 20 minute walk will do
  • Emotional problems can have an effect on what we eat so, we have to physically get active and go out so we get our nutrients and vitamins.

What have you gained by coming together?

The following points were highlighted during the discussion:

  • One of them said that they begin to know one another through the activities.
  • Also, they provide the service to them by supporting the elderly, especially when they are distressed or picked on.
  • Looking forward to gaining something tangible and reasonable every week.
  • The project makes them feel relaxed, enabling them to forget about worry during the week, and preventing them from lying in bed which can kill people.
  • Eating together during the programme has made a difference, different food every week. ‘Feel beloved, not alone. These made us feel at home, being with your own people’.

Computer

Some of the elders have started to use computers, surfing the internet and checking their emails.  We have created an email address for those who did not have one.
