The mental well being of black people is part of The
Peacemakers' Health Promotion activities which is set
up to raise awareness of health issues amongst
African and Caribbean people. We celebrated the
WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY (WMHD) on 2nd October
1999. It was our belief that by promoting mental well
being, we might reduce isolation and lack of support
for people in distress.

OBJECTIVES FOR WMHD:

The following objectives for WMHD were emphasised
on the posters and flyers that were distributed
around West Yorkshire:

1)  mental health concerns everyone.
2)  anyone can experience mental health problems.
3)  individuals, organisations and communities can
all take positive steps to promote mental health.
4) people with mental health problems have a
valuable contribution to make.

The Peacemakers culturally aware service focuses on:

  • Health promotion

  • Health support and advice

  • Health research

  • Healthy food

  • Information on African and African Caribbean health

African & Caribbean Food Event Celebration

In the process of our health research, we organised some
workshops in which we sought more profesional advice on what
we had discovered during the fieldwork.

Our Health Promotion and Research Programme embraces the
impact of healthy eating on a person's well being. For this
reason we held a one-day event on May 20, 2000 to celebrate
    African & Caribbean food
    .

The event was to raise awareness of food production, access
    to food, consumption, health
    and sustainability. More than two
hundred people attended the ceremony which was officially
opened by Marsha Singh MP. The event was organised in
partnership with Bradford Council Local Council.
The Peacemakers projects target the home and the school because: TROUBLED HOME -> TROUBLED SCHOOL -> TROUBLED COMMUNITIES Our service is non-judgemental. We are commited to confidentiality and devoted to equal opportunities policy.
