What is mediation?

Mediation is a process aimed at enabling disputants to reach an agreement that satisfies everyone. Each person is able to talk confidentially about the state of affairs as it affects them. The mediator will then help the parties involved to identify the issues that need to be resolved and ways that each party may accomplish a solution.

  Home-School Mediation and Mentoring

We have developed a holistic approach that embraces parents, schools, social services, youth offending team and police to reduce truancy and help youth at risk. It is our belief at The Peacemakers that
our Home-School Mediation project has given birth to the mentoring project as a result of consultation with (and participant observation of) local children and young people having problems in school. We have noticed that most young people from lone parent families need positive role models to shape their lives in order to make positive contributions. Our experience of running The Peacemakers project for almost ten years in Bradford Trident (a New Deal for Communities) area has shown that the people need our service.
The project concentrates on mentoring relationships in order to provide one-to-one support for young people at risk in order to develop their potential. Out of school lessons will enhance learning while Home-School Mediation will reduce conflicts in the home which can lead to children leaving home abruptly.

  People should know that:
  • The young people have representatives on our Management Board
  • The project helps young people to keep safe through training in conflict resolution, mediation, group and individual support
  • Home-school Mediation helps us to spot children likely to be at risk and other agencies are involved to help them achieve in education/ life
  • Mentoring improves economic and social well-being to facilitate positive contributions.
  • Role Model (adult and peer group) Mentoring focusing on children from lone parent families has helped to put back on the track those who had derailed or have become alienated in society.
  • We organize regular consultations on ‘what could improve life’

Home-school mediation provides a range of support mechanisms for schools and parents by adopting the following levels of preventative method.

Primary - > To prevent onset of problems
Secondary - > To prevent problems from becoming worse
Tertiary - > To prevent further deterioration
Quaternary - > To reduce negative impact

If your children have become disruptive, before they face school exclusion, come and talk to our school mediators.

It is our belief that in order to reduce youth offending, violence, truancy, bullying and school exclusions disruptiveness must be addressed.

Referral can be made by the young person, parents, social services, schools, probation, the police, GPs or other agencies.
